This is more than a story. It's our life's work.

The Louisiana Alligator Farmers & Ranchers & Ranchers Association (LAFRA) is dedicated to promoting the sustainable use, responsible management, and conservation of the American alligator through science-based practices, government and industry collaboration, and community engagement.
Our members advocate for fair regulations, preserving wetland habitats, fostering economic opportunity across rural Louisiana, and advancing education and awareness. Our commitment ensures that the alligator industry remains the global model for conservation through sustainable trade.
Louisiana Proud
Economic Development
The state of Louisiana, by almost every metric, is the poorest state in the nation. Alligator farms are located in rural communities throughout the state. They directly support hundreds of families in geographies with very limited access to employment. The alligator industry supply chain supports thousands of jobs and generates approximately $272 million per year for Louisiana’s economy.
Sustainable Practices
Louisiana is proud to champion 53-years of conservation success in what we call the “Marsh to Market” program. Our program is recognized internationally as a wildlife conservation success story and a model for sustainable use. From a state population of less than 100,000 in 1972 to more than 3,000,000 alligators in 2025, with growth magnified along the Gulf Coast of the United States.
More than 80% of Louisiana’s wetlands are privately owned. This program provides the financial incentives for landowners to invest in the enhancement and conservation of their land rather than consider its use for development.
